I see that individuals and corporations are finding increasing value in having the support and insight of a coach. I think they will become a more and more important to people who believe in taking their life to the next level. Not everyone wants to grow and evolve. I see those that do (including coaches themselves) using the services of a coach in the future.
2. If you had to select a single most important habit change that most people can make to improve their lives, what would it be? Releasing negative thought and talk. Belief in ourselves and our lives, and backing it up with positivity, is an essential tool for positive change.
3. How can you tell is a client is "ready" to be coached? Do you have formula? Most people who come to me are ready at some level. Some make changes more quickly than others. Everyone has a story to tell, but people who aren't ready to change like to hold onto that story. The insistence on blaming others and complaining about life is a sign to me that a person is not going to take their next step soon.
4. Do you think your job uses more listening or more talking? Both. I talk during my sessions, because I'm intuitive. I can see what's going on at a deep level and relay what I see to the client - about their self, business or relationships. We then talk about it. I listen closely to hear how they see their lives and to assure that they understand the big picture. Compassion is essential. Coaching is an interactive dance. I love to listen to my clients and we both grow during the sessions.
5. Is coaching all that you expected it to be? Are the things that keep you coaching, the same as the things that brought you to it?
I grew into the field. I started to share my insights with people and noticed that they changed and grew. I loved it and so did it more and more. I started out wading and am now diving into it full force. I love watching people change and become happier and more fulfilled. It's an addiction I choose to keep.
6. Define success. Self awareness and love, living a fulfilling life for you.
7. What other professions do you see as linked to the coaching profession? Which ones are complimentary? Which ones cannot be used in conjunction?
Everything works together in life to some extent. I've been actively involved in personal growth for over 35 years, taking workshops, working with counselors and coaches, meditating. Yet, one of the most enlightening classes I took was a comedy course taught by Jeff Justice. Learning to laugh at myself changed my life (and made it ALOT more fun for those around me, too!). I support hypnotherapy, chiropractic, personal trainers, or anyone who helps you to be healthy), financial planners . . . It's all good.
8. Do you feel like coaching is linked to your personal beliefs, faith, or spiritual side?
Interesting that you should ask. I just published a book called: Unlimited Life; Limiting Beliefs and Belief Busting Power Truths. In it I describe how our beliefs limit us or free us to create the life we love. I know that whatever we believe we create. Personally I am what is called "very spiritual" as I know and live in a reality where everything is interconnected. I thrive on my connection to my "highest" self and source.
9. How do you determine how many sessions it will take before a client reaches their goal? When they reach this point do they ever continue coaching because they now have an even broader vision? I let the client determine the number of sessions they want to have. Many of my clients check in with me every so often for a "tune-up" or to deal with a specific issue.
10. How important is image in the coaching industry? Do you think it should be more or less important? what do you think new clients should look for in a coach image, beliefs, credentials?
As with everything else, I believe in choosing coaches that work with you on an eye-to-eye level. We all know what's true for ourselves, and the coach needs to honor a client's truth. I guide my clients with insight and expect that from my guides. In other words, I suggest and let the client make their own decisions. I think it's very important that we find coaches that have experience and training. It's also important to find someone you resonate with.
11. Is certification necessary?
I think that "coaching" certification is not essential, though some form of training/certification is important. This can be in the form of psychological training, ministry, or credentials in a health field which includes training someone to coach or work at that level others.
Thanks for the interview. These are very insightful questions and I've enjoyed answering them.
My Best,
Deborah
